Art Into Action

Art Into Action is an organization established by Louisiana-natives dedicated to the preservation of our culture, environment, and wildlife through the creation of accessible art for the benefit of communities across the state.

Founded by New Orleans-based design firm Logan Killen Interiors, this initiative is formed by a group of creatives channeling their talents to spread awareness and directly fund local grassroots organizations.

Having built a career around creating environments, we know there is an inherent connection between the spaces we create indoors and those beyond our four walls—and that both are directly related to our well-being.

To date Art Into Action has donated $2656 to Rise St. James (and counting with the sale of each print).

Our Environment

In a state renowned for the beauty of its wetlands and coastline, we also know that it continues to be ravished by the petrochemical and oil and gas industries. Though the battle to preserve our coasts is one that is well-known, the effect of the unyielding mining of our resources is one that continues to be overlooked. A vast majority of these environmental aggressors continue to impact minority and low-income communities across the 85-mile corridor known as Cancer Alley that stretches from New Orleans to Baton Rouge—home to seven of the ten census tracts with the highest cancer rates.

One of the communities affected by the relentlessness of the oil and gas industry is the 5th District of St. James Parish, home to many historically Black residential communities like Welcome. With 12 petrochemical plants in a 10-mile radius, St. James residents are exposed to innumerable toxins released into their air and water supply each day—but there is a strong movement to end the industry’s stronghold on Cancer Alley and the surrounding parishes.

Spearheaded by Sharon Lavigne, grassroots environmental initiative Rise St. James has led the fight against multi-billion dollar development plans by Formosa Plastics and Wanhua Chemical Group to move into the community. Through her work and partnership with the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, Lavigne continues to push St. James into a future beyond plastics production.

Posters by Nora Patterson

Our first iteration features three designs by our friend and colleague, Ponchatoula artist Nora Patterson, sold in our New Orleans storefront, Sunday Shop. Nora is a designer and self-taught illustrator, born and raised in Louisiana. She draws her inspiration from nature; quiet swamps, cicada-filled forests, and the pull of the southern wild.

In an effort to support our city’s vibrant creative community, all posters are printed locally in partnership with printmaking studio Four Finger Press. Proceeds from these limited edition prints will go to Rise St. James to aid in their efforts to preserve the environment and build safer, healthier communities for its residents.
